Jebel Akhdar, the “Green Mountain” of Oman, is a paradise for adventure seekers. Nestled in the Al Hajar Mountains, this high-altitude escape offers cool weather, breathtaking landscapes, and thrilling outdoor activities. Our trip combined the best of camping, via ferrata climbing, and stargazing, making it an unforgettable mountain adventure.
Day 1: Arrival & Camping in Jebel Akhdar
We set off from Muscat, driving through the winding roads that lead up to Jebel Akhdar. The drive itself was an adventure, with steep ascents and jaw-dropping views of deep canyons, terraced farms, and ancient villages.
Setting Up Camp
After finding the perfect campsite near Diana’s Point, we pitched our tents overlooking the dramatic cliffs. The air was crisp and refreshing—so different from the heat of the lowlands.
Before sunset, we took a short hike through the nearby terraced farms of Al Ayn and Al Aqur, famous for their pomegranate orchards and traditional falaj irrigation systems. The views of green terraces against the backdrop of rugged mountains were absolutely stunning.
Campfire & Stargazing
As night fell, we lit a campfire, cooked a simple meal, and relaxed under the crystal-clear night sky. With minimal light pollution, the stars were brilliantly bright, and we could easily spot constellations, planets, and even the Milky Way.
The peaceful silence of the mountains, broken only by the occasional cool breeze, made it a perfect night in nature.
Day 2: Via Ferrata Adventure
Morning: The Via Ferrata Challenge
Waking up to a cool mountain breeze, we packed up camp and headed to our next adventure—the Jebel Akhdar Via Ferrata. This iron-climbing route, built along the mountain cliffs, is one of Oman’s most thrilling experiences.
After gearing up with harnesses and helmets, we began the adrenaline-pumping climb along a network of iron rungs, ladders, and cables attached to the rock face. The views were both breathtaking and nerve-wracking—one slip and we’d be dangling above the deep canyon!
The highlight of the route was a suspension bridge crossing a dramatic gorge. The sheer drop below made our hearts race, but the sense of achievement at the end was absolutely worth it.
Afternoon: Relax & Departure
After the via ferrata, we took some time to unwind at one of Jebel Akhdar’s luxury resorts, enjoying a well-earned Omani coffee and soaking in the incredible views.
By late afternoon, we began our descent back to Muscat, leaving behind the cool mountain air but carrying memories of an epic adventure.
Final Thoughts
Jebel Akhdar is one of Oman’s most spectacular adventure destinations. Whether you’re into camping under the stars, scaling cliffs on a via ferrata, or just soaking in the mountain’s beauty, this place has something for every explorer.
