Two days and one night, offering a unique experience that combines adventure and cultural immersion in the mountains of Oman.
If you’re looking for the perfect mix of history, culture, and adventure in Oman, a short trip to Nizwa, Al Hamra, and Jebel Shams is just what you need. Over two days and one night, we explored the old town of Nizwa, cycled through the cultural treasures of Al Hamra, and camped under the stars before trekking up Oman’s Grand Canyon. Here’s how it all unfolded.
Day 1: Nizwa & Al Hamra – History and Cycling Through Time
Morning: Exploring Nizwa
We started our journey in Nizwa, one of Oman’s oldest and most historically significant cities. Our first stop was the Nizwa Fort, a 17th-century stronghold with stunning views of the city. The massive round tower, built by Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Yarubi, offered a panoramic view of the date palm plantations and surrounding mountains.
Next, we wandered through the Nizwa Souq, famous for its silver jewelry, khanjars (Omani daggers), and pottery. If you’re visiting on a Friday, don’t miss the goat market, a fascinating experience where local farmers auction off their livestock.
Afternoon: Cycling Culture Tour in Al Hamra
After a short drive to Al Hamra, we switched gears—literally—by hopping on bicycles for a guided cycling culture tour through this 400-year-old village. Al Hamra is home to some of Oman’s best-preserved traditional mudbrick houses, and cycling through its narrow alleyways felt like stepping back in time.
One of the highlights was visiting Bait Al Safah, a restored heritage house where Omani women demonstrated traditional practices like making Omani bread, coffee, and weaving. The warm hospitality and sweet dates offered here made the experience even more special.
After the tour, we grabbed a quick local meal and prepared for the next adventure—camping in Jebel Shams.
Night: Camping Under the Stars in Jebel Shams
As the sun started to set, we made our way to Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest peak. The drive up was an adventure in itself, with winding mountain roads and breathtaking views of the Grand Canyon of Oman.
Setting up camp on the mountain, the temperature dropped significantly, offering a refreshing escape from the heat of the lowlands. A simple dinner by the campfire, a sky full of stars, and the peaceful silence of the mountains made for a perfect night in nature.
Day 2: Trekking the Balcony Walk in Jebel Shams
Morning: The Balcony Walk (W6 Trail)
We woke up early to start the famous Balcony Walk, a stunning trail along the edge of the canyon. The W6 trail, as it’s officially known, is about 4 km (one way) and leads to an abandoned village called Sab Bani Khamis, which is carved into the cliffside.
The views along the trail were simply breathtaking—sheer canyon walls, dramatic drops, and stunning rock formations at every turn. The village itself was fascinating, with old stone houses that told stories of a time when people lived in this extreme terrain.
Afternoon: Return & Relaxation
After completing the trek, we made our way back down, stopping for a traditional Omani lunch at a nearby guesthouse before heading home.
Final Thoughts
This short but adventure-packed 2-day trip to Nizwa, Al Hamra, and Jebel Shams perfectly blended history, culture, and outdoor exploration. From cycling through a 400-year-old village to trekking the Grand Canyon of Oman, it was an unforgettable experience.
